Frequently Asked Questions

Why do some routes cost more than others at the same distance?
Moving costs are not purely distance-based. Demand imbalance is the biggest factor. Routes from the Northeast and Midwest to the Sun Belt (Florida, Texas, Arizona) are in high demand, so trucks and containers are plentiful going that direction. The reverse routes have less demand, which would seem cheaper but actually costs more for truck rentals because the company needs to reposition the truck back to a high-demand area. Fuel prices, toll roads, terrain (mountains), and urban congestion at origin and destination also affect pricing.
How does distance affect full-service mover pricing?
Full-service movers charge based on weight and distance. A typical formula is a base rate plus a per-mile charge. For example, a 5,000-pound shipment (2-bedroom home) might cost: $2,500 base + $0.50/mile. At 1,000 miles: $3,000. At 2,000 miles: $3,500. At 3,000 miles: $4,000. The per-mile cost decreases as distance increases because the fixed costs (loading, unloading, insurance) are spread over more miles. This is why a 3,000-mile move is not 3x the cost of a 1,000-mile move.
Is there a distance where flying and shipping boxes becomes cheaper than moving?
For a studio or 1-bedroom with primarily lightweight belongings, shipping boxes via USPS or UPS and flying can be cheaper than any vehicle-based move for distances over 1,500 miles. 30 medium boxes shipped USPS Priority Mail: approximately $600-$900. One-way flight: $100-$300. Total: $700-$1,200. Compare to truck rental at the same distance: $1,200-$1,800. This only works if you sell or donate furniture and larger items.
Does the cost per mile decrease for longer moves?
Yes, for all three methods. Truck rentals: the base rate includes the first 500-1,000 miles, so each additional mile adds less to the total. At 500 miles, you might pay $1.50/mile effectively. At 2,000 miles, the effective per-mile cost drops to $0.80-$1.00. Container services similarly have a base rate that covers a minimum distance. Full-service movers have the steepest per-mile discount curve because their labor costs (loading/unloading) are fixed regardless of distance.
